IU gets a new police chief

After 23 years of working at the Plainfield Police Department, Jill Lees will become the new IU Police Chief. She is set to begin in March. Despite the fact that she has been in Plainfield for over two decades, Lees should not have too many problems finding her way around campus - she got a criminal justice degree from IU in 1995 before going to work in Plainfield.

A community-minded chief

Her impressive credentials are well rounded, but her community engagement makes her really stand out:

  • She taught a Drug Abuse Resistance Education program
  • She is an advocate for coffee and cops events as a way to build community
  • She has also taught self-defense classes

Lees replaces Larry Flint, who will become the first director of threat assessment and engagement for IU Public Safety and Institutional Assurance. Flint has been with the department for 36 years and is no doubt well known to many IU alumni over that time while keeping the campus safe.

"I was looking to continue that strong presence with community engagement that we have with Chief Flint," said Associate Vice President for Public Safety and Institutional Assurance and Superintendent for Public Safety Benjamin Hunter. "Making sure we have an individual that could come in and build those relationships with faculty, staff and students."

Best of luck!

Here at Shapiro Lozano we wish the best of luck to Chief Flint in his new role at the school and welcome Chief Lees. We know that both will contribute to making our school and home a better place to live.
